"My emotions don't reveal the quality of my LIFE...they only reveal the quality of my thinking." Jeanne Mayo --Personal Mind Games and Discouragment
Difficulties push our emotions to the forefront. They are so revealing as to where we truly are. The other day I had a very "revealing" moment Do you ever have those? Moments where you feel so overwhelmed and like you are constantly playing catch up? In moments that feel discouraging or overwhelming the worst parts of my thinking seem to flow directly out of my mouth. I tend to summarize all of life with ill fitting words like, "Well, this is all chaos." When in actuality just the moment feels chaotic.
When I make a mistake or fall short on something like... MOTHERHOOD. LOL My thinking tends to go the worst first. I say stuff like, "I'm so failing my kids right now." In this last step in Overcoming Negative Self-Talk we are going to discuss the POWER of TELLING YOURSELF THE TRUTH.
The choice we make to flip the negative script has the power to change the trajectory of our lives. Remember, I told you back in Step One that even if your circumstances never change, you can change in your circumstances. It's true!!! All hell can be breaking loose around you, but when your thinking is clearly set on you knowing WHO you are in christ, you change.
We don't have the power to change others, we only have the help of the HOLY SPIRIT to change ourselves.
William Bakus wrote a book called, Telling Yourself The Truth. I went through this book some years ago and it gave me the tools I needed to start the journey of rewriting my script. One of his tools is you take your negative thought and write it out. Then re-think it in a positive way and rewrite it to be full of truth. Example from the book, "My kids behave so terribly I've developed a temper I just can't control." (Not true, The truth is, "I have taught myself to respond to my children's poor behavior with outburst of temper. I choose this behavior.")
Listen, this is not the POWER OF POSITIVE thinking. This is the actual act of what the bible calls renewing your mind.
This allows you to live a ROMANS 12:2 life.
"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will."
Press into the areas in your thinking that do not line with who God says you are. If you are struggling with thinking that you are defined by your past. Check out what God say's about that..
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!" 2 Corinthians 5:17
